I don't think it's appropriate to say "Happy Juneteenth"-- this day celebrates the day that the LAST of the enslaved people in the colonies learned they had been freed... 2.5 years earlier... and was freedom really their lived experience after that?
I do, however, want to acknowledge the importance of that day for the formerly enslaved African Americans and their descendants.
You see, I believe (and epigentic science agrees with me) that deep in our bones and in our DNA, we hold both the traumas and the triumphs of our ancestors.
May today be both a solemn and joyous day of remembrance-- depending on your personal perspective-- of the end of the darkest period in the history of the colonies (now country). It's been mostly a solemn day for me.
It's that time of year again- time for me to come out as queer to those of you who may not know (although the Pride flag probably gives me away).
Why do this? Because I'm very aware that I "pass" as straight, and with that privilege comes a responsibility to be "loud and proud" for those in the community who can't pass and have endured discrimination and full-on hatred.
Happy Pride, y'all!! π³οΈβπ π¦ π
