What does it take to effectively manage a remote team as a business owner?

→ Less control and more trust.

I know how it feels for business owners when they start letting their team WFH. It's kind of like, "Am I missing something?" When you can't see your team right there in the office, it's natural to worry they might not be working as hard.

But here's the thing – remote work can actually increase productivity by 7% (according to Forbes)

You just need to adapt your business operations to this new dynamic.

Here's how:

  • Define clear KPIs and objectives so your team knows exactly what's expected of them.
  • Maintain regular communication through check-ins and team meetings to keep everyone aligned.
  • Develop a solid operational framework that outlines everyone's responsibilities and collaboration channels.
  • Ensure your team has clear guidelines on workflows and the tools they'll be using remotely.
  • Cultivate a trust-based culture that encourages virtual interactions among team members.

I'm a remote work advocate. After leaving my 9-5 job, I built my Amazon business to travel more. I get so many ideas just from talking to different people I meet along the way. In fact, the ideas for my startups often come from these encounters.

This is why I opt for a remote team when building my company. I want my employees to enjoy the same freedoms. The more they can move around and meet new people, the more creative and productive they become, which in turn benefits the company.

For years, I've used this approach and am proud to have built an outstanding team from across the globe. Despite our physical distances, we're united in working towards and growing with a shared goal.

You don't hear me say this often, but don't take this advice:  (especially if you're running an Amazon business) . . . → To scale your business, you have to set a BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal).

I know "Go big or go home" is our motto as entrepreneurs.

But in my experience, a goal without a plan can make you and your team feel overwhelmed and even hopeless. As Entrepreneurs, we assume that those around us see and understand the world like we do... HINT: THEY DON'T!!

So, do this: Set a meaningful vision, but start with small steps (do this with your team in the room!).

There's a framework called the 𝐒𝐢𝐱 𝐒 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤.  It outlines 6 crucial areas founders should focus on while building their business.  In my experience, these are also 6 critical aspects to focus on when scaling.

Because these are things you deal with every day.  So, if you optimize them, you can mitigate many growth-related risks.

Speed - Assess how fast you can and should grow. Scope - Investigate areas offering the most promising opportunities. Staff - Ensure you have a team of skilled and highly motivated employees. Structure - Reorganize your company to focus less on day-to-day operations. Series X - Understand how your financing strategy aligns with your growth plans. Shared Values - Make the company's core values less personal and more universal.

I've broken down this framework into step-by-step instructions.  ✅ You can follow them by referring to the attached image below.

But the key thing of starting small on a visionary mission is:  Set a tangible process so your team knows where they're going.  Celebrate when you reach your goals, remind your team how these wins help with the big dream, and then set new goals.

By doing this, you'll ensure that everyone stays motivated and the company is moving forward.
