John D. McConnell, M.D.

John D. McConnell, M.D., is the former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Emeritus of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center (WFBMC) in Winston Salem, NC.

He held the Gordon Haynes Chair of Urology and served as the Urology Residency Program Director.

With a background in academic clinical practice, research, and education, Dr. McConnell transitioned to academic medical center leadership in 2001 at UT Southwestern.

Recruited in 2008 as the inaugural CEO, he merged and then separated institutions to form a fully integrated academic medical center at Wake Forest.

WFBMC includes Wake Forest Baptist Health, Wake Forest School of Medicine, and Wake Forest Innovations and Innovation Quarter.

In 2017, he founded Wake Forest Healthcare Ventures to commercialize software development expertise, now part of the WF Center for Healthcare Innovation where he offers business development advice.

Dr. McConnell also serves on the Advisory Board of FCA Healthcare Fund, an early stage venture capital investment fund.

His education includes a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine and Bachelor's degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry from The University of Kansas.

He completed residency training in General Surgery and Urology at UT Southwestern Medical Center and a post-doctoral fellowship in Urology Research at the same institution.

Formerly holding positions such as CEO, Professor of Urology, and other leadership roles at Wake Forest Baptist Health and UT Southwestern Medical Center, he brings a wealth of experience to his current ventures and advisory roles.
