Is AI content "worth it?"

I've kept a close eye on AI content over the last few years. I have quite a few colleagues who work with or run content companies producing content with AI.

My company EditorNinja has edited over 2,300,000 words of AI content over the last two years.

So, I want to understand it deeply and what it requires to be "good" content that is brand-friendly, engaging, and ultimately achieves business goals of traffic, sign-ups or leads, and revenue/customers.

I have to be honest about something:

I'm losing faith that AI content is worth it.

I see a lot of people looking for an editor to humanize and "make it good." They're creating a book with 30,000 words, but it lacks any sort of organization, varied writing, citing of sources, quotes by experts or real examples, and so much more.

Basically, it lacks what makes writing GOOD.

These people then want someone else, a non-expert, to "edit" it to the level that an expert would be happy putting their name behind.

But, they're unwilling to pay what would be needed to do that. Basically, they need a ghostwriter with strong editing chops, not an editor.

Those people are hard to find, extremely expensive, and extremely busy to boot. So, good luck hiring them. It's like bringing on a business partner.

So yeah, I'm not convinced AI content is the answer. AI is great for a lot of things, like research or data crunching or writing basic code, but I'm increasingly very skeptical that AI-generated marketing content or bigger content like books is a good idea.

Let’s talk about the etymology of the word “blog.”

Ok, I’m going to date myself here.

“Blog” comes from the word “weblog,” which were the original websites where people would publish articles.

This was shortened around the late 90s/early 2000s (around when I started blogging) to “blog.”

But, each individual article within WordPress at least is called a “post,” different from a “page,” aka a “landing page.”

So, technically, you write articles, not “blogs.” Language may have changed and people call them “blogs,” but technically, “blogs” is multiple websites.

So, you write articles for multiple blogs.

Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.
