Like a lot of folks in DC's transportation circles, I was saddened to learn of the passing of Mort Downey, the longest-serving U.S. deputy secretary of transportation in our nation's history. I was fortunate to work with Mort on a few occasions and you would never guess his stellar C.V. based solely on his quiet, modest demeanor. For me, he was always willing to help you think through and refine policy ideas in the service of making the product better. That's what stands out the most to me - even after leaving public service, he never stopped being a public servant.

For those of you appalled at what is coming out of Washington, DC these days, let me offer a refreshing contrast today in Republican House Transportation Chairman Sam Graves urging the Senate Commerce Committee to support President Biden's nominee to lead the Federal Aviation Administration, Michael Whitaker. Chairman Graves based his support on Mr. Whitaker's deep knowledge, passion, and the need for the FAA to have a leader advocating for our continued leadership in aviation and safety - despite the difference in their political affiliations and the Chairman's recognition that they would not always agree on all issues. The appearance was not widely covered by the DC press - but it was a powerful moment nonetheless. Chairman Graves once said that to keep Washington working, "you have to do the work." Well, Mr. Chairman, today you did the work. Thank you.
