As a parent, I feel damned if I do and damned if I don't when it comes to my kids and social media. Common sense (and lots of research!) tells me that the likes of Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat do more harm than good to young kids and early teens. But I also don't want my kids to feel left out or excluded from a place where all their friends are, or fall behind when it comes to learning the ins and outs of engaging digitally.
13 is too young for a child to have unfettered access to internet trolling and unrealistic imagery inviting negative self-comparison, not to mention signing away their data to a corporation. I support raising the age limit to 16 and am grateful to Paul Smith for using his platform to add urgency to this important issue.
