Lead iOS Developer at Shiratronics
Is your release always two weeks away? BLE flaky? Does your app have intractable crashes? You need help.
"John is a seriously impressive individual. As an app developer, John has produced beautiful, functional, and popular apps. As a person, he is one of life's stars. I met him through the Business of Software Conference, where he has been a regular attendee for many years. Over the past few years, he has also 'sponsored' attendance at the event for recent engineering graduates with the intention of giving someone an introduction to the world of software. Extremely generous with his time and energy." -- Mark Littlewood, CEO, Business of Software Conference
I have a track record of helping teams fix their broken iOS apps and software development processes, especially Bluetooth (BLE) integrations. If you need someone who can identify a business need and quickly solve it with an app, I can help. I have helped many organizations design and implement a mobile app strategy, including helping several problematic apps ship to the App Store or improve their key metrics.
I'm also an advisor and investor in growth & seed-stage SaaS software businesses: 1 Second Everyday, Summit, ReForm, Reimbi, and Castos. I’m an inventor on seven patents through my startup work.
Currently, I lead the development of iOS apps at ShiraTronics, a medical device startup. In addition, I have led the development of many sophisticated mobile products, several of which were integrated with Bluetooth Low Energy peripherals; one managed connections across a pool of more than 40 BLE devices.
The most well-known products I’ve worked on include Scannable, Evernote, and Skitch for iOS.
I have extensive hardware experience: Bluetooth, JTAG, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, Linux Kernels, and developing software used in CPU manufacturing.
Community involvement:
2021: Guest on MicroConf on Air (3/17/2021)
2020: Presented to the Twin Cities iPhone Developers.
2019: Presented to Swift Devs Miami about growing your iOS career.
I've sponsored student grants for many Business of Software Conferences and many MicroConfs (the US and Europe).
I regularly attend the Business of Software Conference, WWDC, and MicroConf. In addition, I've given public presentations on a variety of topics.
Highlights
I connected Claude Code to Google Search Console and built an SEO auditor. It pulled my search data, found page titles getting truncated in results, identified content gaps, and wrote a full SEO brief. The whole thing took an evening to set up.
Even if outbound is your bread and butter, think about what happens after you send that cold email. A lot of prospects will Google your category before they reply. If they find your competitors and not you, you've lost credibility before the first conversation.

When companies introduce AI governance, employees who use non-approved tools don't stop — they switch to their phones. They put company data into personal AI accounts to get their jobs done faster. A sysadmin subreddit called it shadow AI.
The fix isn't banning it. There's an apocryphal story about Stanford building their campus with no sidewalks. They let people walk wherever they wanted for a year, then paved the paths the grass revealed. Figure out where your employees have already worn those paths and just legitimize them.
Meanwhile, your vendors are adding AI without asking. JIRA added AI to Jira Cloud. Some CAD tools are training on user input — your proprietary designs feeding someone else's model. As one attendee put it: "Is this actually making the product better, or is this just keeping up with the Joneses?"
