Highlights
So excited to finally share that the Cocoon team has been acquired by Substack!
Almost two years ago I joined Cocoon with the goal of helping to create a new space to share with your loved ones, untainted by ads and the algorithms that accompany them. Now our team will start a new journey tackling the same problem in a different but similarly critical area: journalism and the broader health of discourse in our society.
Working with Sachin Monga, Alex Cornell & Josh Pyles has been the greatest privilege of my life and I'm so proud of what we've accomplished thus far. Much to come from this team— we're just getting started. Oh, and Cocoon isn't going anywhere. It will continue to operate as an independent app supported by subscriptions. Thank you so much to our customers; you've allowed us to make it this far, and continue on into the future!
We launched Cocoon almost a year ago. It’s been really fun— and kind of crazy— to see it working as a primary source of communication for tight knit groups (and actually helping to bring them closer!). We’ve learned a lot, and bundled some big changes in a new update we're releasing today as Cocoon 2.0.
For context, we believe that social networks were designed for sharing. Remember the days of Facebook/Twitter when you’d give updates on the progress of your laundry? Well, that’s long gone. ⬆️ network size = ⬆️ ad revenue = ⬇️ sharing and meaningful ephemerality. Group messaging apps have taken their place as the home for sharing, but they're just as bad. Spawned as a wrapper over SMS, these apps have to cater to the lowest common denominator, leaving your most active group chat on the same playing field as 2FA codes.
Cocoon 2.0 is designed to be the best messaging app for sharing with your most important groups. A combination of async/synchronous messaging and calling, rich features for sharing and a new beautiful archive are catered for this purpose. We're also launching the Android beta and our subscriptions plan- Cocoon is privacy focused and ad free! Check out our new website at https://cocoon.com
