John McMahon is a seasoned product management professional with extensive experience in driving product strategy and development across various industries. He served as the Head of Product at Obsesh from October 2021 to September 2022, where he was instrumental in creating a product vision and roadmap that resulted in a significant increase in orders and customer retention. Under his leadership, Obsesh, a coaching marketplace for athletes, saw a 67% month-over-month repeat customer rate and a 57% year-over-year increase in athlete acquisition through user interviews and prototypes. Unfortunately, the startup faced challenges in securing further funding, leading to team layoffs.1

Prior to his role at Obsesh, McMahon held several key positions, including Senior Director of Product at Giving Assistant, where he developed strategies that boosted revenue by 50% and user growth by 85% over two years. His career also includes significant contributions at NetBase, where he oversaw the launch of a machine learning product that enhanced ad engagement significantly.1

McMahon holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering with a specialization in Human-Computer Interaction from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is also pursuing additional certifications in marketing strategy and business modeling.1

Last week I sat in on a great talk on how and when to pivot a startup by Steven Cohn at Dan Olsen's Lean Product and Lean UX Meetup Silicon Valley.

I keep coming back to these notes:

  • Every failure is a learning opportunity
  • Identify the most pressing, most urgent needs of your target audience by answering: Is the problem going to get my user paid more money if we're successful or get fired if we're unsuccessful? How am I going to make my user look amazing, like a hero to their boss?
  • Expect to pivot when you start a company - even if you do a lot of customer discovery work up front, you will likely need to change your strategy without adjusting your vision
  • Use customer discovery and the validation of hypotheses to guide a pivot towards something with demand-pull, e.g., which part of the product do people see value in?
  • Be bold and ask for a credit card when you get a verbal commitment
  • A strong signal for Product Market Fit (PMF) is it's not hard to sell your product, e.g., a customer says "do you take a credit card?" when demoing your product
  • Every renewal is a test of PMF since it's fleeting, so do a sales win/loss analysis every two weeks by interviewing 5 customers who purchased and 5 customers who were in the pipeline and didn't purchase
  • Most entrepreneurs are not visionaries, like Steve Jobs, so be persistent, expect to grind it out and use learnings to move the business forward
