John Paterson

John H. Paterson is a former mining engineer and consultant who now owns and operates Rio Magnolia Nature Lodge and Coffee Farm in Costa Rica with his wife Maureen.12 He grew up in Toronto and studied engineering at Queen's University before working in coal mines in Alberta and British Columbia.1 After 20 years of consulting and managing small mining companies across five continents, John and Maureen sold their home in 2006 and moved to the south pacific region of Costa Rica.1
At Rio Magnolia, they built an off-grid nature lodge and coffee farm, where they generate all their electricity using a micro hydro plant and protect 200 acres of rain and cloud forest.1 The property hosts nature enthusiasts, wildlife photographers, and other visitors from around the world.1
In addition to managing the lodge, John has pursued writing. He self-published a novella called "The Trouble With Cash" in 2016 and completed his first novel, "Spirits' Gold," in 2018, drawing inspiration from his experiences in the mining industry.1
It's worth noting that as of January 2025, Rio Magnolia Nature Lodge appears to have new owners, according to a Facebook post.3 While John and Maureen no longer own the lodge, they expressed happiness that the new owners plan to conserve the property's beauty.3
