Doing something difficult is a great opportunity to learn more than you expected.

One year ago I started learning Japanese. Quite frankly, I still have a long way to go.

One year and some months change ago I started working heavily in cybersecurity. I still have a long way to go on that one as well. Some days it feels like barely any progress has been made, but when I look at the total difference it’s quite surprising how much I’ve learned.

Using Wanikani to study written Japanese I’ve been exposed to at least 3,000 words and their corresponding kanji that comprise them. The countless hours of listening have helped me process words faster and form rudimentary sentences.

The same thing goes with cybersecurity. I have ran a multitude of meetings with clients to discuss vulnerabilities and what their system is going through. Almost like another language, I’ve picked up vocabulary and understanding that might not total 3,000 but has expanded my knowledge just the same.

But it’s not just about the quantifiable.

I would have never made the connections that I did, or have the experiences of learning to cook Sukiyaki or help plant Sakura trees without the Japan America Society of Greater Cincinnati (check out their events, they’re great). I would have never gotten that extra understanding when I read Murakami.

I would have never been able to progress this far in my career without the support of my team at AHEAD. I would have never had staunch opinions on certain cybersecurity or IT practices and I would have never understood how to better understand myself, the pieces and parts that make up my career, to fit into something more cohesive and stronger.

The delta over a year is crazy to think about, all those little steps really add up.

A lot of Industry 4.0 content out there right now is pretty light on meaning, full of buzzwords, and kinda boring. That's why I wrote this. Come for the wine talk, stay for some interesting insights in an evolving industry. (Please provide your own Chianti)
