"This is what intelligence is, paying attention to the right thing."

–E. Hall, Anthropologist

In the pursuit of peak performance, mastering the inner game is key.

But how do you zero in on what truly matters?

Here’s a thought: Intelligence isn't just about solving complex problems It's about the ability to discern what's pivotal amidst the noise.

Examples from my coaching:

I once worked with a CEO struggling with decision fatigue. The solution wasn't to collect more data but to identify core priorities. Here we developed his and his team's capacity to do Pareto analyses to focus on the laces of maximum impact and highest yield. In this way, the most critical and strategic items were solved with less effort in less time. Items that were not as critical we deprioritized and often unneeded.
By refocusing using Pareto they achieved accelerated growth and larger contracts.

In your journey, ask yourself: Are you running things like Pareto? What demands your attention vs. what deserves it?

Paying attention to the right thing can transform your results and impact.

Which areas of your leadership need a recalibration?

The trouble with concentration," said Bert Blyleven, a baseball pitcher of yore, "is that you do not know when you have lost it."

Ever thought that maybe... chasing concentration is overrated?

We’re obsessed with focus. We’re told it’s the key to success. But is it?

Have you ever noticed how your best ideas come when you're not "in the zone"?

You may be working on a significant problem for hours. You keep working at it deep into exhaustion. You may think you are still in concentration yet as Bert observed you weren't aware that you had already lost it.

In a teaching popularized by Stephen Covey, we need to "sharpen the saw". To solve our problem we need to take a break to refresh and rest our tools. in this instance, the tool is your mind and creativity. It may be your team.

This suggests that maybe, just maybe... Our brains need to wander a bit. To daydream. To relax.

Peak performance isn't about intense focus 24/7. It's about knowing when to let go. To allow mental space for creativity to flow.
Remember our conversation on impulse?
It's a very similar concept.

Next time you hit a wall, try this: Take a walk. Do something that restores you, that refreshes you. Disconnect. Smell the flowers.

You may notice you will come back to the same problem with new perspectives, new insights, and new energy.

How do you sharpen your saw?
