How to hit $1 million bucks by age 30
I had a post the other day on how the average millennial net worth is $8k, but I thought it would be worthwhile to show the other end of the spectrum.
Here's a roadmap to hitting a million bucks by age 30.
The key here is salary - cutting spending alone won't get you there. To hit a million by 30 you really need to work in a competitive industry - which these days is either tech, finance, or management consulting.
Sound unrealistic? GlassDoor has Google new grad software engineer total compensation at 126k, while working in finance or management consulting would likely be similar in the early years as well.
The hard part is keeping your lifestyle inflation in check over the years. It's extremely tough to go from making $100k to $300k while keeping your spending more or less unchanged, but it is absolutely necessary if you want to hit that number by 30.
Here's where it gets interesting - even if you stopped saving for the next 20 years after your 30th birthday, you'd still end up with nearly $5 million by age 50.
Even if you're not on track yet, now is the time to start! Invest regularly, live below your means, and keep looking for ways to increase your income.

The average millennial net worth is now under $8,000 - according to a recent study from Deloitte.
We need to advocate for more financial education to help get the 20-30 year old demographic on their feet.
That means guiding millennials towards being more savvy with their use of debt, investing regularly, and finding ways to grow their income.
Here are some stats to show how important it is for a 25 year old to get some good habits in place:
Saving $250/month will leave them with $500k at age 60
Saving $500/month will leave them with $1M at age 60
(Assuming an average 8% growth rate over 35 years)
How does someone actually get there? Even working a minimum wage job here in California, adding $250 a month would be about 25 hours of work a month, or 6 hours a week. Maybe that means working an extra day a week before you can get a higher paying job. Maybe that means starting a side hustle (Ruby Lee/Yunzhe Zhou). The point is that it's doable at any income level, although it's obviously much easier for those that are simply cutting spending.
Every 20-something has the power to be a millionaire at some point in their lives - they may not get there tomorrow or in 5 years, but following basic financial principles WILL get them there eventually.
