Background and Career
Shelton was born and raised in the Midwest region, moving between Missouri, Tennessee, and Illinois.1 He played football and ran track at Southeast Missouri State University on a scholarship.15 After college, he briefly signed contracts as a defensive back with several NFL teams, including the Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, and Los Angeles Raiders.15
Following his playing career, Shelton worked for Procter & Gamble for 10 years before transitioning to full-time ministry.1 He joined the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) in Greensboro, NC, serving as Area Director and team chaplain at Elon University.1 Later, he became the FCA chaplain for the Virginia Tech football team from April 2007 to July 2013.15
Role with the Baltimore Ravens
As the Ravens' Team Chaplain and Life Coach, Shelton is responsible for:

- Assisting players through difficult life situations
- Offering prayer and spiritual guidance
- Conducting prayer walks on the field before games

Personal Life
Johnny Shelton is married to Thlitha, his college sweetheart, and they have two adult children.16 He is known for his calm presence, listening skills, and ability to provide a safe space for others to process life's challenges.16 Shelton is also involved in couples counseling and other activities that help strengthen faith within the Ravens organization.5
