Highlights
If you hate and dread networking, it is possible you don’t know how to do it.
To wit, I had a fantastic conversation the other day with someone I hope I will be able to count as a new friend.
I am really looking forward to more conversations with them.
We met because of our mutual interest in UX; because of a comment or a post that led to a message, and because I regularly suggest a virtual coffee break when I actually interact with someone here.
I know that some of those calls will be one-offs, for who knows how many reasons (I’m shy, they’re shy, they didn’t love my energy - I can be pretty weird- or vice versa), and some of them will be transactional (no matter how many times I tell people not to do that…)
But some of them are inspiring.
That’s networking.
Cast a net as wide as you feel comfortable with, and get to know people you met because of work. When appropriate, help one another out by:
• introducing them to someone you know that they should. • letting them know about an event that might be meaningful to them. • being a sounding board for new ideas or just listening when they need to vent. • looking for opportunities to collaborate.
And the only metric, the only KPI I actually care about in terms of content creation on LinkedIn is meaningful interactions, opportunities to learn from or help the amazing people I’ve met here.
Thanks to everyone who brings their authentic self into my world- you make networking worthwhile.
Maybe let’s grab [virtual] coffee?
Cheers,
Jon
