Highlights
While all the attention has been on negative prices across Europe today, networks on opposite sides of the world started trials to curtail residential solar last week. In the Netherlands, Stedin and Eneco are taking a market-based approach, offering €10 to consumers who participate in at least 3 of the 10 test events in August and September, plus at least €0.40 per kWh curtailed. In Australia, SA Power Networks tested the Smarter Homes PV curtailment system, implementing the State Government's mandate that embedded generation installed since September 2020 must be able to be remotely disconnected. While in the long run residential and grid scale batteries, demand flexibility and increased interconnection will have a growing role in balancing the system, expect more DSOs to trial similar schemes as the quickest way to address the impact of the rapid growth of residential solar.
It's sad to see this announcement from Glowb, especially as we've observed an uptick in the acquisitions of developers and installers over the past few years.
Our recent study found two thirds of acquired installers focused on solar, while half of these acquisitions were by energy retailers seeing the opportunity to: 💱 offer new services to existing customers, and 🚗 develop a channel focused on early adopter customers more likely to own flexible assets like EVs, batteries and heat pumps
It's just a few months since I saw Glowb exhibiting with Zoa at Solar & Storage Live in what was shaping up to be an interesting partnership.
