Highlights
I spent the morning at one of Generate's community solar projects in the Finger Lakes. Those who know me know that it's one of my favorite places in the world. So cool to see Generate powering peoples homes, farms, and businesses. Thanks to the team for helping to power the place my family has enjoyed for over 4 decades with clean power and creating good local jobs!
After a year and half of working with some extraordinary leaders attempting to build a new climate smart economy, I have decided to take a permanent position with Generate Capital as the Head of External Affairs and Impact.
Many of you know Generate. Over the last decade, that team has built a new model for scaling the critical projects we need to take the best shot at avoiding a climate catastrophe. Nearly a decade ago I had the incredible honor of sitting in a room with Bill Gates to try to solve a big problem -- bringing new public and private capital together to build an innovation infrastructure that will invent the things the world needs to address the hardest to abate greenhouse gas emissions. Over the next 8 years, I worked with him to create the vision and build the team that resulted in Breakthrough Energy. I remain hugely proud of what that team continues to accomplish.
As I've often said, every successful industry innovates while it builds. Breakthrough helped address the capital problem on the innovation side. Despite progress, however, the world continues to dramatically underinvest in scaling many critical clean energy projects. To effectively address the climate crisis the world must build confidence in new financial structures to build, operate, and scale the projects that will feed a new Industrial Revolution. That will take creativity, leadership, and a deep understanding of how capital flows and how to build, manage, and invest in the projects around the world. It will require that we breakdown the language barrier between operators and regulators and private and public capital.
Generate has been building that platform for a decade.
While I wasn't looking for a new gig - I've had fun working with a diverse set of clients on my own and with friends and colleagues Boston Consulting Group (BCG)- the opportunity to help leaders like Scott Jacobs and William Sonneborn build the next generation of the Generate platform was too good to pass up.
