Highlights
It's a tough job, but somebody's gotta do it. 😏
Seriously, charger reliability is a big issue and someone has to get out there and inspect these sites. Many technical problems can't be remotely diagnosed - and even if there are no tech issues, there can be a huge range of environmental issues preventing utilization.
🔎 That's why a program of regular field inspections to support preventative maintenance are so important. Uptime is important, but uptime does NOT automatically yield utilization. Here's just a few things we've actually found:
🍬 * Gum in the CC chip reader 📰 * Stickers and graffiti on screens 🐦 * Bird $#@! covering handles 🐝 * Bee hives in cabinets 🚽 * Other stuff...
⚡ And sometimes we find issues that could decrease equipment lifecycles. Or worse. On my rounds yesterday, I found a critical issue that could have really hurt someone. The charger was online and functional - a Toyota Motor Corporation BZ4X was charging when I arrived - but a risk of electric shock was present, so I cordoned off the area and called it in. (A tech arrived within hours and rendered the machine safe.)
Bureau Veritas North America has trained staff driving a variety of different EV brands, using different payment systems, making regular visits to charging stations across the country. So that charging networks know about problems before they get reported on PlugShare.
Will it always be me driving a Lucid Motors Air? Unfortunately, no, but that's what we needed for this particular purpose, so...Happy #EarthDay to me!
If you’re in Vegas for the EV Charging Summit & Expo and would like to connect, please find me at our panel discussion Thursday at 1:05 or DM to schedule time with me at the Answers Bar 12:00-1:30 Friday. Let’s talk about how we can get more ports energized ASAP!
