Highlights
I’ve had the opportunity to work with some incredible people all over the world: from Moscow to Karakalpakia, from Tallinn to Bengaluru, from London to Kyiv.
But Yonkers is where I met Dion Drew, just north of the New York City line. And no one compares to him. I worked with Dion Greyston Bakery, helping him tell his story of selling drugs, going to jail (“upstate,” as he liked to put it), getting a job, turning his life around, getting promoted, and raising his daughter.
And now he is in hospice, likely to leave us soon. But for ourselves as much as for him, we need to take note of this remarkable man. Dion gave so much to so many people, every day.
His enthusiasm, his passion, his candor, his willingness to let his emotions show, his determination to do what is right serve as an inspiration. He’s as authentic as they come.
He cried giving his Ted Talk. His smile floods the room when he talks about his daughter. And he champions OpenHiring™ the transformative policy at Greyston that gave him a second chance.
As Dion explains better than I can, it wasn’t so much about the job or the money, but about “being a man.” https://lnkd.in/erj_RcXt
Filming him was an honor and a privilege. A reminder of the power of purpose. Testimony to the capacity we each possess to overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges. Evidence that we need each other -- and that together we can make a better world.
Give a listen. Take a look: https://lnkd.in/eksY8pA4
Remember Dion’s words, "When I help another person, it do something for me, it put a smile on my face. Just imagine if everyone walked around smiling, how much better life would be."
Put a smile on your face. Do something. If you can help him and his family, please do: https://gofund.me/3d480999
