Highlights
I’d first like to thank everyone who has sent messages of appreciation for Living Blindfully following the announcement of its closure at the end of this month. I have kept a number of them permanently as they were very touching. Now it’s time for talk of the future. I have published episode 299 of Living Blindfully, featuring a conversation with Mark Riccobono, who is President of the National Federation of the Blind about my exciting new role with NFB. The episode is available in your podcast player now, and the audio and transcript are on the Living Blindfully website. I have quite a lot of New Zealanders following me here on LinkedIn, so I will explain that the National Federation of the Blind is a US advocacy organisation. It was founded back in 1940 and there is no doubt in my mind that it has been the most transformative organisation of the blind that the world has ever seen, changing attitudes, raising expectations, and creating new opportunity. When I was a teenager, I realised that the biggest barrier I faced in life was not blindness, it was other people's perceptions of it. This made me depressed, dangerously so for a while, until I was fortunate enough to connect with NFB online. They showed me I wasn't alone. They gave me hope and encouragement. As a young leader, I attended my first NFB convention back in 1995 and I've been attending regularly ever since. I never dreamed that I would have the opportunity to serve, to contribute, at such a senior level to the organisation that has shaped who I am. It's like coming home to family after a long time away and today is undoubtedly the happiest day of my professional life. I am getting to work right away with the organised blind movement to progress a range of important technology issues, many of which we have discussed over the years on Living Blindfully. These include fostering meaningful relationships with technology companies to ensure blind people are given due consideration when products are being scoped, developed and tested. Just as important as ensuring that current and future technology is accessible is keeping people informed about all that is possible. This includes helping to make sense of the increasingly complex choices we often have to make when it comes to choosing the right tool to live the life we want. That’s why, as part of my new NFB role, I am pleased to be working with the Federation on some new podcasting and information dissemination initiatives. More on those in due course. I have always believed that when you follow your heart, when you do what truly is the right thing for you, the universe usually takes care of things. Tomorrow I start working through the pile of important but exciting priorities. But today, I'm just pinching myself, with a big smile on my face.
Not long now until I can discuss my very exciting next chapter in life. In the meantime, it has been such an honour to have built the Living Blindfully podcast up to having thousands of blind people listening in 113 countries. Thanks to everyone who supported it.
