Luxury in China is not dead. Look further

Thanks a lot Jeanne Spicarolen x Stephanie Coleau. Happy to have share thoughts on BFM Business on the evolving China luxury market. We cannot analyze the decelerating Chinese luxury market without mentioning

(i) Referential remarks Market has to stabilize to a new normal after a stellar growth in 2020 / 2021 when Chinese tourist luxury purchases repatriated locally. Which doubled the mainland market in 2 years. More an exception than a rule.

(ii) Time comparison remarks All markets experienced a needed transition in the 12-24 months post restriction. Not just economic, but also psychological, motivation of youth etc. We should not compare China to other markets now, but 2-3 years ago.

(iii) Geographic remarks The (slow) restart of travel and (not so) surprising stellar growth of Japan sales (+28% to +45% each quarter) when luxury goods are 20% to 25% cheaper in Japan than China due to the low yen (Luxurynsight for WWD) https://lnkd.in/dJJRNj2k.
