The Confession of Evangelical Conviction is the Belhar Confession for the "Western Church". So if you profess to be a follower of Jesus and you are reading this in a country that used to be colonized or is currently occupied by a Western power (yes, there are still colonies), then you should SIGN IT. In the same way that the Dutch Reformed Church gave theological legitimacy, covering and defense for apartheid in South Africa, the White American Church enabled, enforces, and defends White Supremacy, greed, patriarchy, and unchecked extraction of national resources. So in the same way that there needs to be explicit confession and specific repentance in that country, there needs to be specific confession and repentance in this one.
And this confession does that by calling us to allegiance to Christ, submission to scripture, and the honoring of the image of God in every person. This confession calls us to the prophetic mission of the church, the necessity of truth-telling to power, and a holy reminder of the healing power of the Gospel. And, it requires us to choose love over fear. If we did those things, it would be impossible to be beholden to White Nationalism and American Exceptionalism. It would be impossible to practice White American Folk Religion. And that is precisely what the American church needs to turn away from. This week's post is short because the action step is simple. If you confess Jesus as Lord, then you're saying Caesar is not; and that same confession should ring true for us today. America is not the kingdom of God.

When I decided to follow Jesus, it was a revolutionary act. When I said Jesus is Lord, I was joining a long line of disciples who said “Caesar is not”. Christians must confess now and forever that “we give our allegiance to Jesus Christ alone. We will lead with love not fear. We submit to the truth of Scripture. We believe the Gospel heals every worldly division. We are committed to the prophetic mission of the Church. We value every person as created in God's image. We recognize godly leaders by their character. We stand united in Christ, resolved to be faithful witnesses of His love in the face of political pressure and cultural shifts. May God’s Spirit revive the Church and strengthen us to be agents of his presence and blessing. To him who is able to present us before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy— to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority. Amen.”
