And now it's official - Yale ends its test optional standardized testing policy.

Elite Universities Reinstate SAT/ACT Requirements

First came MIT and Georgetown, then Dartmouth, and now, probably Yale. To be clear, although Yale has not yet officially announced its policy change, Forbes and Bloomberg report that Yale's Dean of Undergraduate Admissions has confirmed that the policy is under consideration, and that an announcement will be forthcoming. In other words, Yale has just laid the groundwork for reversing its test-optional policy. That means we can now expect a slew of other top universities to jump on the bandwagon.

These policy reversals are being driven by several studies conducted at top universities over the past few years. Those studies have shown that the group most negatively impacted by test-optional policies are students from lower performing schools. Ironically, these were the same students that universities thought were most harmed by requiring standardized test scores. Yet according to Dartmouth's own analysis of its applicants from the last few cycles, students from low performing schools chose not to submit SAT scores in the 1400s (and equivalent ACT scores), assuming that such scores were too low to make them competitive for admission. Those applicants were wrong. Their decision not to show their scores cost them dearly.

Dartmouth and other universities have asserted that standardized test scores (ACT or SAT) are better at predicting academic performance in college than grades, personal essays or recommendations. To be clear, an SAT score in the 1400s (or an equivalent ACT score in the low 30s) is below average for admitted students at most elite schools, but context matters. Unlike their more affluent peers, students from low performing schools generally lack access to private test preparation and tutoring, which can raise standardized test scores by 10% to 20%. Essentially, Dartmouth is arguing that these relatively high standardized test scores from students at underfunded schools demonstrate their immense promise and aptitude.
