De meeste van ons zijn wel bekend met je tuin winterklaar maken. Een bezigheid waar ik persoonlijk niet zo in geloof. Snoeien voor de vorst en de bodem aanharken waardoor deze kaal is zorgt namelijk voor degeneratie ipv regeneratie. Moet je nagaan hoe ver we gaan voor dat beeld van een lekker opgeruimd tuintje. Maar enfin ik heb mijn eigen vader ook nog niet kunnen overtuigen.
Afgelopen weekend hebben wij ons voedselbos Nature's Profit zomerklaar gemaakt. Compleet anders dus dan het bovenstaande. Ons doel is om het bos weerbaarder te maken tegen ziektes, hitte en voornamelijk droogte. Dit doe je door organisch materiaal (takjes en bladeren) vooral te laten liggen. En als dit er, zoals in het geval van ons baby bos, nog niet is dan kun je de bodem verreiken met b.v. houtsnippers.
Het droogte record van 2023 heeft de basis regel: zonder water geen bomen, akelig levendig gemaakt voor ons. Daarom hebben we de investering (want dat is het) in houtsnippers gedaan. Elke boom heeft een pannenkoek van houtsnippers om zijn stam gekregen. Wat op korte termijn uitdrogen van de grond zal vertragen en op langere termijn het bodemleven zal voorzien van wat hoog nodige organisch materiaal.
