Jorge Perez is a seasoned professional with a robust career focused on economic development, particularly in the vibrant city of Chicago. He began his journey in the business world at a very young age, growing up in his family's grocery and bakery stores, which provided him with a strong foundational understanding of commerce and community engagement. From 2001 to 2008, Jorge served as President of the Calumet Area Industrial Commission (CAIC), where he spearheaded initiatives to foster growth within the local manufacturing industry. During his tenure, he cultivated valuable relationships with numerous business leaders, manufacturers, and logistics companies, significantly shaping the industrial sectors on the far south side of Chicago. Jorge’s leadership was instrumental in promoting a modern image of manufacturing, shifting perceptions and enhancing engagement within the community.
In 2008, Jorge transitioned to the role of Deputy Commissioner for the City of Chicago’s Department of Aviation. Here, he played a pivotal role in overseeing the Concession Program for both O’Hare and Midway International Airports. His leadership in the Concession Programs Redevelopment Plan—which included an impressive array of 230 stores across categories such as food and beverage, retail, and duty-free—demonstrated Jorge’s capacity for large-scale project management and his commitment to enhancing the travel experience for millions of passengers.
After his significant contributions to the Department of Aviation, Jorge took on the position of Vice President of Strategic Planning and Policy for the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA). This role tasked him with the critical responsibility of long-range planning for the city’s bus and train systems. Here, he developed sustainability strategies, and engaged in market research and data analytics, further showcasing his strategic acumen in urban transportation.
Currently, Jorge is the Executive Director of The Hispanic American Construction Industry Association (HACIA), an organization dedicated to ensuring equitable participation in the construction industry for its members. Since its founding in 1979, HACIA has grown to include over 300 members, and under Jorge's leadership, it has focused on promoting growth, enhancing the quality of work, and upholding the professionalism and integrity of those in the industry. In recognition of his contributions to the community, Jorge was recently appointed by Mayor Emanuel to serve as Chairman of the City of Chicago’s Community Development Commission, a testament to his outstanding leadership and commitment to serving the public good.
