I don’t think what we choose to focus on toward improving work reflects our values. It reflects what work artifacts we have subconsciously learned to focus on in any attempt to improve how the work gets done.

When we join work, we adopt the values of the org and we are directed to focus on the importance of the artifacts we use to command and control the work.

We don’t really get to explore our personal values.

By this point, there is no bandwidth for focusing on any driving values and whether they are aligned with what we hoped the work would be about.

So what we end up thinking about and working on is all of the entrenched artifacts.

What gets reflected is our unconscious dedication (which isn’t really reflective) to attempting to command and control work when in reality it is inherently complex, uncertain, and emergent.

Context certainly matters but it’s also a convenient out for wanting to stick to current ways or holding off on change just a bit longer.
