5895 West Olympic Blvd is a great example of why we have a housing crisis in Los Angeles:

The proposed project was a 118-unit, 100% affordable apartment building.

This is exactly where city officials say they want housing to be built.

  • It's a vacant, commercially-zoned lot
  • On Olympic Blvd, near the intersection of San Vicente and Fairfax
  • A 5-minute walk from a subway stop opening next year

So why was the project denied?

Los Angeles Department of Water and Power requires that all apartment buildings place massive transformers in front with direct street access, with no windows or doors nearby. There wasn't room for this in their plans.

So the developer asked the city if they could put the transformer in front of a single-family home they own next door

LADCP than proceeded to deny the project because "in no instance shall an ED 1 project be located in a single family or more restrictive zone"

This would almost be funny if there weren't 45,000 people living on our streets

A few hours after the launch event, my student housing bill AB 3116 was killed by an unelected Committee Consultant who called it a “developer giveaway”

She purposely withheld her proposed amendments to the bill until the last possible minute to make negotiations impossible.

Committee Consultants are supposed to be impartial, but she made it clear she opposes increasing housing production.

I am heartbroken and disillusioned with the California legislative process. Unelected bureaucrats should not have unilateral power to kill bills.

You shouldn’t need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in lobbyists to ensure your bills are heard in committee.

I know that by posting this I’m probably going to be blackballed from having bills heard in the Assembly Housing Committee for the next few years. But so much of the legislative process is shrouded in secrecy out of fear of retaliation. This silence just perpetuates bad behavior, and I’m not going to be complicit.
