Thank you Tim Schneider at The Art Newspaper for another excellent article!

Ultra-high-net-worth individuals have been taking out loans collateralized by works of art for decades. Now, it's taking another leap forward as some of these art loans are being bundled, securitized and sold as investment vehicles to US buyers.

And as usual, Sotheby's is raising the bar again, when in April it announced it would raise $700m through ArtiFi Master Trust, Series 2024-1 Asset-backed Notes.

Is there risk in buying and selling art? Of course! But to quote Yieldstreet's Chief Executive Rebecca L. Fine, "This should put to bed any questions of whether or not art is a credible asset class."

Many people in the art world have mixed feelings about this (including me), as the indexing and liquidity of art as asset class continues to evolve. While this confirms the legitimacy of high-value art as an asset class, one wonders if this is a potential threat to the current art ecosystem, or a potential avenue to expand and expose more people to the joy of art and collecting.

A great article with keen insight into the evolution and intersection of luxury and sneakers, streetwear, and collectibles. As someone who worked at both StockX and Sotheby's, participated in this vertical as it blew up, and I'm excited to see the next chapter of this story. Take care of those kicks, you never know... 😁
