God is great!
Last week I had the opportunity to join in what God is doing in El Salvador by partnering with Fundación Misiones para Cristo (Nonprofit Missions for Christ) and Pastor 2 Pastor Training Network. I taught Old Testament in four different locations to pastors and leaders who are doing wonderful work in their communities and witnessed firsthand the amazing work of Fundación Misiones para Cristo. God is working in and through his people. And it was a huge privilege to join in that by edifying his church in this way.
May we follow Christ's path at every moment, and may we do all that we do for the glory of God (1 Cor 10:31)!
The importance of embodying one's own sermon cannot be overstated. A sermon might be seen as simply gathering as much information on a Biblical text and then explaining it to a group of people. Or a step further might be done where this text is applied to people's lives in the congregation. A lot goes into those steps, yet a fundamental aspect is missing: embodying the message.
Professor Jaclyn Williams in her class "Methods of Embodied Preaching" expounded on this concept by applying theater principles to sermon proclamation. This includes being mindful of posture, doing vocal stretches, and incorporating the congregation's other senses in a meaningful way in the preaching. However, the lesson I most appreciated and have taken to heart is taking the personal time to let the text speak to ME. It involves wrestling with the text on a personal level, being open to what God has to say, and letting that flow through the sermon. In theater, an actor/actress attempts to let the character seep in so that they become the character on stage. In a sermon, we let God work in us through this text so that when we preach, we are proclaiming his Word from the heart and not simply from our minds. It has been wonderful seeing God work in the congregation ever since I began to put this into practice. May God continue working in our lives and in the global church.
