Joseph Robert Muto, known as the "Fox Mole," is a former employee of Fox News who gained notoriety for leaking insider information to Gawker in 2012.1 He worked as an Associate Producer for "The O'Reilly Factor," Bill O'Reilly's show on Fox News Channel.1

Muto began his career at Fox News as a production assistant in July 2004 and was promoted to associate producer for "The O'Reilly Factor" in January 2007.1 In April 2012, he started a column on Gawker called "The Fox News Mole," where he leaked gossip and unreleased footage from Fox News.1 For his actions, Gawker paid him $5,000.1

Fox News quickly identified Muto as the source of the leaks and fired him.1 Subsequently, he faced legal consequences for his actions. On May 9, 2013, Muto pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges: "attempted unlawful duplication of computer material" and "attempted criminal possession of computer material".13 He was sentenced to community service and fined $1,000.1

Following the incident, Muto wrote a book titled "An Atheist in the FOXhole" about his experiences at Fox News.1 As of 2023, Muto has moved on from his media career and was promoted to the role of Chief Information Officer at Independence Capital.2
