Highlights
ChatGPT has me hacking again and I love it
When I started Bluecadet 17+ years ago I was a designer and a Flash developer Personally, I loved Flash. I used it for work but I also used it to solve problems I would create elaborate xml files and then write Actionscript to visualize the data This was everything from interfaces, but also my calendar, to-do lists, whatever... Sometimes it generated what looked like Post-it exercises Sorting, resorting, looking for patterns I'm a very visual thinker and Flash worked brilliantly for me Unfortunately, Flash was killed I never found Processing, Python or Javascript as rewarding a sandbox I was kind of missing this ability and maybe leaned a little heavy into Post-its :) Until, chatGPT came along It's like old times. I'm using it to query data, visualize things I'm using it with Figma, Its a brilliant co-pilot I fkn love it.
Try.not to give away your work for free.
I’ve been mentoring a super talented young entrepreneur who runs a smaller agency.
He’s been desperate to get more work so he’s been giving away concepts to larger agencies for free
The logic is that they’ll like him, like his agency’s work and they’ll be invited to the party.
His work is great but the tactic isn’t working for him.
I reminded him of how that dynamic plays out in other aspects of life.
How we seldom value in friends, romantic partners, etc people who are just a bit too eager
The guys barking at you to eat at the restaurants on Miami Beach don’t have the best food
That there is a fine line between friendliness and desperation.
I’ve learned this lesson the hard way, given away a fortune in hours. Learn from my loss.
Business and life are the same thing.
Better to charge. Give a discount, but let them know your value.
