I was recently asked by a major ticketing company President about the benefits of issuing tickets on a blockchain system. So want to share a high level overview.

To start, when issuing digital tickets on blockchain, tickets change from the mundane receipts that they are today, to become engaging fan experiences by bringing them alive with content: video, music, playbill content, artist-to-fan messaging, in-venue promotions, exclusive offers, loyalty rewards, and more. The resulting consumer experience is one in which tickets unlock entertainment, commerce, and fan community.

These capabilities can increase the lifetime value of customers, reduce churn, decrease remarketing spend, and create loyalty.

Tickets can be used to reward fan loyalty, target upsell opportunities, and enhance sponsorship programs. -Blockchain can offer valuable data on a growing range of purchase behaviors such as what other shows and games a fan has seen, what fan club tokens they own, whether they have membership tokens to particular brands/retailers/organizations, etc. -True human fans will, as blockchain adoption continues to mainstream, have a public, time-stamped, immutable blockchain activity history that scalper bots will find challenging to duplicate or fake (i.e., more than just a phone number or credit card number). While not KYC, it is an indicator that these are buyers not bots.

Blockchain will make secondary markets a better experience for consumers (and more profitable for issuers, artists, promoters, teams, and venues) by leveraging blockchain’s unique capabilities: -Automatically collect royalties from all resale transactions, even when sold outside of ecosystem. -Eliminate speculative ticketing since only one authentic ticket can exist with blockchain. -Create trust in the authenticity of secondary purchased tickets by enabling each ticket’s validity and history to be verified in public databases.
-Identify, flag and disincentivize bad actors in the secondary market via “on chain” analytics. -Have the optionality to take advantage of the powerful ticket resale controls (on pricing, timing, quantities, participants and transferability) that blockchain can enable and enforce – all of which can be deployed in a manner that puts consumer interests first.

Blockchain will power new, incremental, high-margin revenue streams. -Sell media-rich digital collectibles and ticket stubs as collectible mementos, proof of attendance, and keys to unlock access to additional experiences, VIP areas, upsell offers, and future on-sales. -Sell sponsorships and advertising inventory that is presented alongside a ticket’s media. -Generate more cross-sales and upsales via in-ticket promotions for upgrades, food & beverage, limited edition merch, etc.
-Power loyalty and retention programs via in-ticket content and offers. -Offer free and paid membership programs that use blockchain tickets as the access key.
