The problem with ChatGPT writing copy isn't that the copy might be brilliant. The problem is it’ll be just the level of mediocrity that many clients are looking for and comfortable with. But at a lower price.
What to do if someone you know gets laid off.
Don’t make light of it. Don’t tell them they’re better off. Don’t tell them “Damn, I wish they’d lay me off; I fucking hate this shithole.” Maybe you do. But keep it to yourself. Getting laid off is a gut-wrenching feeling and after the gut-wrenching feeling ends, the fear-of-how-you’ll-pay-your-bills” feeling kicks in lightning fast.
Reach out to them immediately. It’s a lonely feeling to walk out of your boss’s office after you’ve been told today is your last day. Even lonelier if you work remotely and were told over zoom. So if you work in the same office, be the co-worker that takes that person out for lunch or at least get them hammered.
Do all you can to help your friend get freelance and/or a new job. You know a lot more people than you think. Use Linkedin to post their portfolio. Not once. But over weeks. Do you know in-house agency recruiters? Especially the ones who work at agencies that aren't hemorrhaging business? That information is gold.
Stay in touch with them. No matter how awkward or uncomfortable you may feel talking to them, they feel worse. Much, much worse. They’re now completely untethered from a world that contained close friendships, and one that was part of their identity. After they’ve been gone a week, you’d be shocked at how few of their former co-workers are checking in with them.
Help them update or redo their resume and/or portfolio. They’re rattled, pissed off, scared, and sad all at the same time. Not exactly in the right frame of mind to show the world how wonderfully talented and qualified they are.
And to expand on that last point: Their ego and confidence have been crushed all in the name of year-end numbers and corporate math. It more than likely had little to do with their actual talent. So reminding them how talented they are might seem minor, but it goes a long way.
