"De-influencing” might just be the new way to influence.

Goodbye 👋 pushing products and driving endless consumption (there’s hope for our wallets and bank accounts yet!)

The trend of de-influencing, which started around 16 months ago after a makeup influencer was caught faking a product’s effectiveness, has become a powerful movement.

Content creators are making content that actively discourages people from buying new products, and it’s racked up hundreds of millions of views and it’s having a real economic impact.

A recent Harris Poll | Credit Karma survey found that 69% of social media users have chosen not to buy products advertised on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Why?

🔵 32% don’t trust the influencers

🔵 28% doubt the products’ authenticity

🔵 26% are turned off by the sheer volume of products being pushed

Interestingly, these are the same reasons de-influencers are gaining traction, especially with Gen Z. 88% of Gen Zer's say they’ve been de-influenced, and 38% are consciously lowering their consumption due to financial or sustainability concerns.

It’s not that people aren’t buying anymore, but the shift in mindset is clear: people are becoming more selective, INTENTIONAL, and the power of influence is evolving.

Is de-influencing the new age of influencer and content marketing? Let’s talk about it.
