Joshua W. Buckholtz, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University.24 He is an experimental psychologist and neuroscientist who focuses on understanding human self-control and its variations.2 Buckholtz directs the Systems Neuroscience of Psychopathology laboratory (SNPlab) at Harvard.13

Buckholtz's research interests include:

  2. Characterizing circuit-level pathomechanisms underlying self-control failure in impulse control disorders

He received his B.S. in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2003 and his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Vanderbilt University in 2011.14 Buckholtz is also affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital as an Assistant in Research (Research Assistant Professor) in the Department of Psychiatry.45

Buckholtz has received several awards and honors, including:

  • Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow in Neuroscience
  • NARSAD Young Investigator Award from the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation
  • William F. Milton Fund Award from Harvard Medical School5

He is a Network Scholar for the MacArthur Foundation's Research Network on Law and Neuroscience and serves on the faculty of the Center for Law, Brain and Behavior at Massachusetts General Hospital.2
