It was a bittersweet weekend having the privilege of keynoting the Indiana University - Kelley School of Business Investment Banking Alumni Super Day in memoriam of my first boss, mentor, and Kelley Fellow Thomas Cole. My presentation began by showing a 10-minute video of Tom speaking to college students on life and career advice. Next, I discussed 5 themes TC would convey if he were there, and illuminated them with passages from his forthcoming book, The Narrow Gate - he wrote the book for his 3 children upon realizing he had not passed down enough wisdom to them after suffering two prior heart attacks. I subsequently shared many stories of working on deals with Tom and numerous comical recruiting trips to IU. I met Tom while I was in undergrad, and, as opposed to most students aiming towards working at a particular company, I aimed towards working for Tom. For the weekend, I also brought along two of my three children to hear the stories and life lessons I learned from Tom, and we also visited many of his favorite spots, including Zagreb’s and Nick’s.
