Joshua Roth
Head of Fine Arts at United Talent Agency
Joshua Roth was the founder and head of the fine arts division at United Talent Agency (UTA). He created UTA Fine Arts in 2015 to represent contemporary artists, applying their talents beyond traditional museums and galleries.12 Roth, who passed away in September 2018 at the age of 40 due to heart failure, was known for his efforts to bridge the worlds of Hollywood and contemporary art.13
Prior to joining UTA, Roth served as chair of the art law department at the law firm Glaser Weil for six years.1 He grew up in a prominent Los Angeles family with connections to the art world; his father was Steven F. Roth, a co-founder of Creative Arts Agency (CAA) and a trustee at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.3
At UTA, Roth's client roster included numerous fine artists, photographers, and mixed-media artists. He was instrumental in collaborations with high-profile talents such as Chinese conceptual artist Ai Weiwei and video artist-turned-filmmaker Steve McQueen.1 Roth also played a key role in securing financing and distribution for Ai Weiwei's documentary "Human Flow".3
Roth's vision for UTA Fine Arts included opening exhibition spaces, with the first UTA Artist Space launched in Boyle Heights in 2016, later moving to a renovated warehouse in Beverly Hills.13 His sudden passing in 2018 was a significant loss to both the art and entertainment industries, where he was recognized for his impeccable taste, creativity, and dedication to bridging these two worlds.12
