If you are a people leader, when things go well, it's because of your team. When things go poorly, it's because of you. That's the job you signed up for. If you don't like it, please don't be a people leader. You'll improve everyone's lives by going back to IC.
My father was a trauma nurse and chief coroner growing up. Dinner conversations were unique. Some days, when he was a coroner, my father would call my mother on his way home and say, 'Get the hose ready.' He'd come home, get out of the car, and my mom would spray him down.
My father was once called on Christmas to pick up body parts from a train suicide. He'd work overnight to clean up terrible highway accidents. He'd console families facing tragic loss. And then he'd come home, get a wash, and have dinner with us. And those conversations were unique.
Why am I sharing this? You'll notice that blue collar conversations don't exist on LinkedIn. But many of us have grown up blue collar, experiencing an incredible rawness of human existence and connection in our early childhood that doesn't really exist here in the white collar social network.
We're all hustling for our best lives. We're all shooting for the stars here. Let's not forget our roots. Let's remember how precious life is; how hard people work; especially blue collar, how much our parents and grandparents and beyond toiled so that we might have the privilege even to just socialize in a network like LinkedIn. Appreciate the privilege, and those who got us here.
