Two weeks ago marked my first in-person industry event in over two years, joining industry leaders, founders, and academics at SXSW EDU. Despite a smaller crowd in attendance than most years, the positive energy was palpable with pent up enthusiasm for gathering in-person and makes me just as excited for the ASU+GSV Summit in just 2 weeks.

It was a whirlwind trip, but I wanted to share a few takeaways from the conference:

Public-Private Partnership: The focus on deeper levels of partnerships across public and private sectors is growing. With supplementary educational experiences growing (Outschool, Chegg, Varsity Tutors, et al), the need to ensure these are truly complimentary to the traditional education students are receiving is vital to their efficacy. Outschool spinning out a non-profit to partner more closely with local school districts to offer grants is a great example of this.

KPIs & Outcomes: There is a maturing (albeit nascent) perspective on student outcomes shifting beyond persistence, graduation, and job placement rates to salary growth and promotion rates. Merit America is doing great leading work in this area with studies showing $18k improvements for program graduates.

Fluidity and Modularity within EDU: If “macro stackability/portability” is defined by Associate Degrees, feeding into Bachelor Degrees, feeding into Masters degrees…, we are still very early on the maturity curve of “micro stackability/portability” where credentials feed into degrees, credit is offered for work experience, and course credit is widely portable across institutions. As student demands grow for micro learning, faster speed to degree, and lower cost solutions institutions need to evolve to offer greater adaptability to meet these needs and would benefit from beginning with these assumptions when designing new pathways for students.

XR Experiences: Demand and innovation for EDU XR use cases are growing. Social presence can make learning more immersive, but some filters to consider when evaluating where XR can add the most value are:  -Is the class / module a “lab” experience, particularly one that is tactile (dissections, engine models)? -Would a time machine or enrich the learning experience? Placing a learner within a historical scene or a foreign location can unlock new perspectives difficult to grasp from a textbook or lecture.

I'd love to hear any reflections on the trends or, if you attended, any learnings you had. And for those of you heading to San Diego for ASU GSV, I'd love to meet up!
