Juan Bonilla

Juan D. Bonilla is a Principal Economist at the International Development, Evaluation and Research Program (IDER) at the American Institutes for Research (AIR). With over a decade of experience, he specializes in conducting impact evaluations of agricultural, social protection, and education programs in developing nations.

At AIR, Juan has led numerous agricultural impact evaluations focusing on areas like agricultural extension, contract farming, and farmer market integration in countries such as Kenya, Ghana, Benin, Mali, Uganda, and Cameroon. He is notably leading a multi-armed experimental evaluation program in Tanzania aimed at promoting neglected crops for enhancing smallholder farmers' well-being, particularly maternal and child health.

His expertise extends to evaluations of unconditional cash transfer programs in countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, and Mozambique. In the education sector, he has been involved in evaluating various programs globally, including early childhood interventions in Peru and Mozambique, remedial programs in math and reading in Egypt and Peru, pedagogical support initiatives in Peru, in-service teacher training projects in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, and public-private partnership programs in Colombia.

Before his tenure at AIR, Juan Bonilla served as a post-doctoral researcher progressing to an assistant professor role at the University of Sao Paulo (USP) in Brazil. During this time, he instructed graduate courses in Development Economics and Empirical Methods in Microeconomics, with a specific focus on program evaluation. He obtained his MA in Economics from New York University and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Maryland.

Juan's academic journey includes a Bachelor's Degree in Economics from Universidad de Los Andes, two Master's Degrees in Economics from New York University and Universidad de Los Andes, respectively, and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Economics from the University of Maryland College Park.
