Not to get too philosophical on this here platform, but we live finite lives. In the span of the universal clock, we barely register as a blip. Depending upon your POV, that means that what you say or do in this life means A LOT (or maybe doesn't matter at all -- IDK, I'm not a nihilist). Anyway, seeing yet another company deciding to shelve any #DEI related efforts is disappointing, because it's yet another stain on the legacy we've got rather than the uplifting of the better future we could've had, the better future we could've made together.

There is no default setting for human beings.

Programs designed to improve #diversity, #equity, #inclusion, and #belonging are about overcoming systemic imbalances that some folks refuse to acknowledge exist but that many of us deal with daily. Just because a thing hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it hasn't happened or that it won't happen to someone else.

For example: 💸 Have I been underpaid because of my gender? YES 😑 Have I been treated as less than in a business setting because of my gender? YES 🙅‍♀️ Do I want that to happen to anyone else? ABSOLUTELY NOT

And ponder this: When we don't have a way to see past that which we may be unaware of (dare I say, we may not be awake to it), we are more likely to design and deliver experiences that are exclusive in the worst ways.

This kind of negative exclusivity can -- at a minimum -- lead to lost revenue, customer attrition, increased reputational risk, and increased legal risk.

Is it worth it, to pretend that there's a default setting and that's all that matters? I guess we'll find out. But it would've been nice if, instead, we could be spending less time trying to make it hard for people to live and more time focused on building a legacy that welcomes all of humanity.

👋 Reminder: Arielle Trzcinski and I are co-hosting a webinar today, at 1:00pm ET, for Forrester clients! We'll be talking about this year's #CX Index results for the US #HealthInsurer market, in a reprise of the first-look presentation we did for folks who came onsite to CX Summit NA in June. This is a great opportunity for payers and the firms that serve them to understand how consumers feel about their experience with their health insurers -- and what MUST change if insurers want to win the customer loyalty that supports member engagement and relationship enrichment. Come join us!
