I was a chef in a previous life. To feed multiple customers successfully you need to be fast without losing quality. I now know that I was learning about product delivery.

Prep is a crucial part.

Without prep the whole service slows down and the quality drops. People don't get fed in good time, they complain and probably don't come back.

Starting the service without the prep is fraught with problems.

In my early days as a developer, the prep was the boring bit, I wanted to write the code. It didn't take long to realise that there was an opportunity to make design decisions, find dead ends and validate solutions. Wholesale rework is pretty tedious too.

And prep doesn't just mean drawing flows, db schemas, specs and stories. It includes the fail fast POC/discovery work too, bringing together the expertise to solve the problems. There are opportunities to get your hands dirty as part of the prep. You can make it interesting and fun...and do it as a team!

I'll go back to calling it refinement now.

Make the time and save time.

Fantastic timing on a contract end...what a scorcher of a week!

It's not all play though, this morning I caught up with iO Academy at their breakfast meetup in Bath. They'll be rolling out new curriculums on Cyber Security and Data Science so get ready for some quality hires in those areas soon.

A little play followed, had to get the dog out before it got too hot for him 🥵

Next on the schedule is a skills refresh via a reread of the Team Topologies book (al fresco of course 😁), an insightful dive into organisational team design, please have a read if you haven't already.

I think I know the audience enough to be adding a picture of Arlo cooling down rather than me reading a book.
