If you're still reeling from Governor Kathy Hochul's 11th hour U-turn on indefinitely pausing congestion pricing in New York City, you can contact Gov. Hochul and voice your opinion using this link: https://lnkd.in/ed-R4kds
Reflecting on my previous Fast Company op-ed, three cities globally have implemented congestion pricing with significant benefits to people and the planet. Having experienced London's implementation, the scheme notably reduced traffic, lessened congestion, and promoted sustainable travel, despite initial discontent.
The pioneering Congestion Charge in London in 2003 delivered impressive results:
- Limited traffic entering the zone by 18% during weekday charging hours
- Reduced congestion by 30%
- Boosted bus travel in central London by 33%
- Encouraged 10% of journeys to switch to eco-friendly modes
- Decreased fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 16%
The decision to pause congestion pricing impacts not just New Yorkers but the nation, hindering essential transportation reforms. Let's prioritize solutions like this to fund critical public transport improvements and enhance residents' quality of life.
On the contrary Gov. Hochul, failing to act poses significant unintended consequences, so let's prioritize causes over politics to benefit both New Yorkers and the nation at large.
