However, an organisation is still locked in to their data warehouse’s storage layer, rather than an interoperable/open data storage layer of their choice, which different compute engines can query.
So, what does this have to do with data sharing? Most major data warehouse providers charge a high premium for exporting data outside of their environment 💰. This has led to a major financial barrier that most organisations starting their external data sharing or monetisation journey face. These “egress costs” are a significant revenue source for cloud and data warehouse providers - who naturally prefer their customers’ analytics to stay “locked in” to their platform - and a significant cost for organisations looking to externalise their data.
