Kanishka Narayan
MP for the Vale of Glamorgan | PPS to Britain's Environment Secretary
Kanishka Narayan is a British Labour Party politician who became the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Vale of Glamorgan in 2024.15 He made history as Wales' first ethnic minority MP, marking a significant moment in Welsh politics.15
Born around 1991 in Bihar, India, Narayan moved to Cardiff with his family at the age of 12.5 He received his education at Eton College on a scholarship, followed by studying Philosophy, Politics & Economics at Oxford University and later obtaining an MBA from Stanford University.45
Before entering politics, Narayan had a diverse career:
- He worked as a civil servant in the Cabinet Office under Prime Minister David Cameron and in the Environment Department under Liz Truss.12
- In the private sector, he advised and invested in climate and fintech start-ups across Europe and the US.2
- He also advised FTSE boards, sovereign finance ministries, and start-up founders at Lazard.2
Narayan is passionate about social mobility and social justice.2 He has been actively involved in community work, volunteering with organizations such as Citizens Advice and The Trussell Trust.1 He also ran a national campaign to help British high streets during the COVID-19 lockdown and has published research on helping households in severe debt.2
As an MP, Narayan serves as the Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to Britain's Environment Secretary.34 He is focused on empowering individuals, rebuilding communities, and invigorating the local economy in his constituency.4
