Highlights
Thrilled to announce that The COVID Tracking Project Podcast has been nominated for a Peabody Awards—one of the most prestigious awards in broadcast radio and podcasting! This years-long work was done in partnership with the amazing folks at Reveal from The Center for Investigative Reporting and PRX.
According to the Peabody Awards judges: "The COVID Tracking Project, a massive volunteer effort to document tests, hospitalizations, and deaths in an effort to show where the virus was, and who was dying, became a de facto source of data amid the chaos of COVID-19. The series addresses the crucial concerns the United States faces about why the nation had to rely on volunteerism, rather than federal and state public health institutions, to receive critical COVID data during the worst public health crisis in a century."
We are honored by this recognition, and we are so grateful to everyone who listened and supported this work.
The Peabody Awards elevate stories that defend the public interest, encourage empathy with others, and teach us to expand our understanding of the world around us.

After two years of intensive reporting and producing, I’m proud to be releasing my new podcast: The COVID Tracking Project with Reveal at the Center for Investigative Reporting. All three episodes are out! https://lnkd.in/gY9rvP6g
I can still vividly remember the second week of March 2020 when I read my friend Alexis Madrigal’s post on Twitter calling for volunteers to gather the COVID data needed to understand the pandemic. I immediately wrote to him and somehow ended up co-leading the Reporting and State Outreach Team and Long-Term Care COVID Tracker at the COVID Tracking Project. For the first year of the pandemic, our volunteer-based project compiled the most complete COVID data in the US and became a data backbone of our nation’s pandemic response. When we stopped our data collection in March 2021, I knew the inside story of why our federal agencies failed so spectacularly to supply crucial pandemic COVID data was largely unknown. Over the past 2 years, with an incredible group of collaborators, I set out to answer the question: Why did the COVID Tracking Project have to exist and what does that tell us about America?
I’m grateful for the incredible collaboration and support from so many people. First - Artis Curiskis - my co-executive producer/reporter and steadfast collaborator these past 3 years whose partnership made the work possible, even when it was unbearably hard, Jessica Malaty Rivera, MS, series host and brilliant epidemiologist whose voice brought clarity to this story and made it sing. Al Letson who hosted the episodes and always makes you slow down and pay attention. Max Maldonado, who worked tirelessly to gather and edit more than 650 archival clips and always brought positive energy, Editor Michael Schiller and EP Brett Myers who paid great attention to detail and deftly steered this project to air. Thank you Alexis Madrigal, Erin Kissane, Robinson Meyer, Jeff Hammerbacher, Ryan Panchadsaram, Amanda French, and so many other CTPers who took the time to reflect on such a traumatic and challenging time. Amy Gleason, Dr. Deborah Birx, and others in the government who built crucial data systems from scratch and honestly shared their experiences and perspectives. Aarushi S. for lifting up so much of the LTC work, building community and making us all laugh. Thanks to production assistant Kori Suzuki, incredible mixing and music composing by Jim Briggs and Fernando Arruda, Kathryn S., Steven Rascón, Nikki Frick Thanks Steve Schwartz, Kimberly Lau, Kevin Sullivan, Katharine Mieszkowski and Sumi Aggarwal for believing in this project early and making it possible. Thank you to my data support group pandemic podmates: danah boyd, Gilad Lotan, Ryan Boyd 🐤 and Ori Lotan, and phone call pandemic bestie Benjamen Walker who helped me think through critical data questions from the beginning. And finally Jesse Shapins who kept our family together and whose ideas and creative collaboration are heard throughout the series.
