Love it or hate it, Guzman y Gomez Mexican Kitchen's #IPO shows there is a recipe for a successful float. Almost one month after listing GYG remains above IPO price. Market #timing, #structure and #equitystorypositioning can provide a boost, read my observations below.

A Red Herring: ASX is losing more companies than it is gaining from listings but: 🔔 Liquidity remains high with $8 billion continues to be traded daily 🔔 Australian super funds continue to allocate to equities and comprise c. 36% of total market capitalisation 🔔 ASX is still one of the most active exchanges globally, listing 45 companies in 2023 (NASDAQ had 100, LSE 26 and HKEX 34) 🔔 Net quoted capital in 2023 was ➕$20 billion

So why the shrinkage? This can be explained by #cyclicality in markets

We have reached also reached a cyclical low point in IPO activity and this is being compounded by increased takeover activity, resulting from a number of key factors: attractive valuations especially at the smaller end of town, increased confidence from boards & management to commit to dealmaking with interest rates increasingly looking to have peaked, and the low Australian dollar is making targets attractive for foreign bidders. 🤝

This M&A trends is also exacerbated by many small cap listed companies that have been oversold (which is actually consistent with historical trends where weaker economic environment sees a much larger sell-off versus large caps) and this trend should reverse as conditions continue to improve (note: bidders should get in now while they can). 📉 📈

IPO window cracking open again 👐 The IPO window is at a cyclical lowpoint and due for more activity as activity looking more likely to return 2H this year. Recent US listings of Reddit and Astera Labs were well received. Many more now join the #pipeline. Local hopeful, Tasmea also fast-tracked its IPO bookbuild before listing end of April. Per James Posnett, GM Listings of the ASX: "The IPO market is cyclical, after an extremely busy 2021 it has been relatively quiet over the past couple of years, similar to 2011-12, but activity will inevitably return and we are expecting a broader reopening towards the end of this year and into 2025.”

Can companies stay private forever? With more depth in the market and various liquidity pathways and funding options, companies can stay private longer but not likely forever, especially if they have investor bases that are required to return capital to their own investors at some point. #patientbutnotforever

What is the opportunity for IPO hopefuls: 1️⃣ Listed fund managers will be receptive to new ideas – they just need to be good ones and priced appropriately 2️⃣ Earlier index inclusion on the ASX compared to other exchanges 3️⃣  Lack of direct / reduced comparables provides companies with opportunity to educate the market and create category leadership 4️⃣ Good IPO performance paves the way for IPO hopefuls 5️⃣ Patience and execution will be rewarded and ASX may be an exchange that makes more sense for smaller market cap companies, see Altium® which through its twist and turns is a $9.1bn success story
