What do I love most about spending time in Maine? I come home a kinder person.

There’s an overwhelming culture of neighborhood and community, and if you don’t smile, nod, or wave at a stranger, YOU’RE the odd one.

It always gets me thinking about social norms and how powerful group decisions can be.

If we all wanted to change the world, couldn’t we just decide to act differently together?

Why can’t we social pressure ourselves into being kinder and friendlier?

I’ve seen maps of where people live the longest in the world. But what I want are maps of the friendliest communities.

Every August when I go back to Massachusetts, I bring this friendly spirit with me. My social habits have actually changed over 14 days in Maine.

I wave and smile to folks I don’t know riding bikes past me on Sunday afternoons.

Sometimes get a wave back, but mostly looks of confusion.

My friendly spirit dies in about 48 hours.

But I don’t want this spirit to die.

It would be fun to start a social experiment, where we all wore pins of a certain color signifying that we’re of a friendly mindset.

Maybe we could turn the tide and social pressure our way into friendlier communities, one at a time?

I wonder.

What do you think?
