Karen Lieve Ria Hostens is a well-educated professional who has a background in both humanitarian work and academic studies.

She obtained a Master's degree and two Bachelor's degrees from Universiteit Gent and also studied at SOAS University of London.

Karen has held various key positions within the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), including Deputy Regional Director for Movement Affairs - Africa and several Cooperation Coordinator roles.

Prior to her roles at ICRC, she served as a Senior Policy Officer at the International Federation of the Red Cross Red Crescent (IFRC) and held leadership positions at the Norwegian Red Cross.

Her experience also extends to research and advisory roles, having worked at institutions such as the Nordic Research Board, Research Council of Norway, and the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo.
