Karen Lightman is an accomplished professional serving as the Executive Director of Metro21 and Safety21, US DOT National University Transportation Center at Carnegie Mellon University. She is widely recognized for her expertise in nurturing communities around cutting-edge technologies. Karen excels in commercializing academic research, fostering industry consortiums, and strategically leading teams to pursue market opportunities across various sectors like consumer, military, healthcare, manufacturing, and automotive.

She has been acknowledged for her remarkable contributions, ranking among the top 25 'Women in Tech' by EETimes and being honored with an induction into the MSIG/SEMI Hall of Fame. Karen is a fervent advocate for leveraging technology to address real-world challenges and has actively served on numerous local and national boards.

Karen's educational background includes a Master of Science in Public Policy and Management from Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz College, complemented by a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science from the University of Vermont (UVM). She also attended Joel Barlow HS. Karen currently resides in Pittsburgh, PA, with her husband and dog, taking pride in being a devoted mother to two adult children.
